TOPIC: THE PASSION [The triumphant entry into Jerusalem] (Mark 11:1-11).

THE TRIUMPHANT ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM (MARK 11:1-11)

After healing blind Bartimaeus, Jesus and His disciples drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethpage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives. Jesus dispatched two his disciples to a nearby village. He told them they would find a colt tied to the door. He said no one has ever sat on it and that they should untie it and bring it to him. He further told them that if they were challenged, they should say the Lord has need of it and would send it back immediately.

On arrival to where Jesus was they threw their clothes on the colt for Jesus to sit on. Some people spread their clothes on the wad while others cut leafy branches from the tree. All the people who followed him shouted hosanna, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna is the high highest. The word “Hosanna” is a Hebrew word which means.

“Save us now”. It later became a prayer to God for help and also a shout of triumph. All this happened on the Sunday before his death. Jesus had come as the long-foretold messiah. He entered Jerusalem in His majesty. He now showed His identity as the messiah.

THE SIGNIFICANT OF THE TRIUMPHANT ENTRY IN JERUSALEM

1. The significance of the triumphant entry into Jerusalem was that, it represented first, a fulfillment, of the biblical account of Jesus Christ,

2.Open and deliberate assertion of messiahship.

3.He was not a political conqueror as the Jesus they were expecting His purpose was not to overthrown the Roman rule, rather, He was breaking the power of sin.

Particular note should be taken of the meekness and simplicity of Christ, He rode on a colt, a sign of humility. We are not to scheme or plot treason or sedition against our government Christ did not do so, though He knew it that the Romans lorded it over the Jews.

THE CLEANSING OF THE TEMPLE Matt21:12-17

As Jesus entered Jerusalem, he was angered by the activities of the people who were transacting business inthe temple. He drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, overturned the table of money changers and theseats of those who sold pigeon. He said “It is written my house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it aden of robbers” The blind and the lame came to him in the temple and he healed them.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CLEANING OF THE TEMPLE AND LESSONS TO LEARN

1.“Den of thieves” is an apparent reference to the cheating and exploitation going on in the house of God.

2. Cleansing the temple was a demonstration of Jesus messianic authority.
3. Christians must be ready always to rebuke or even chase away people who have no business being in thehouse of God or people who treat the house of God with contempt.

4.The present day bazaar sales as practiced in some churches today is unscriptural if Jesus action against thereligious leaders in the temple is to be followed
